In order for our Board to adequately prepare for the 2011-12 school year, we will begin accepting registrations for kindergarten programs February 13-24. King Edward provides Full Day – Every Day programming.

Many of you are happily aware of the quality and scope of early years education at King Edward. We are very proud of the staff, programs and resources available for our youngest learners. If you have a child at home preparing for school this fall for the first time, we look forward to seeing you in our office this month. Everything will be ready to make the registration process smooth and easy.

If you know parents with pre-schoolers, it would be sincerely appreciated if you would share with them your experience at King Edward. We believe that our kindergarten programs are unmatched anywhere and our students start building the foundation of a great education in our classrooms. Everyone will be able to see for themselves at our Open House, on Wednesday, February 15^th at5:30, that we do have Big Plans for Your Little One.

KE Lions Make a Difference for patients at HDGH

As we have mentioned before, our theme this year has been KE Students are going M.A.D.! We have been chanllenging our students to make a difference their their school, community and for each other. Recently, KE students teamed up with staff at HDGH to provide a Merry Christmas to patients staying at the hospital over the holidays. Our students provided hand decorated bags which were used by HDGH staff to distribute Christmas gifts to patients! KE Lions do make a difference!

The last couple of weeks it has been wonderful to see so many parents in the school. First of all, our Home and School Association ran a fabulous Halowe’en Chili Thriller which brought out so many families. It was a terrific night. Next we had highly entertaining Student of the Month Assembly on Oct. 31st. It was great to see the parents of our little dancers as well as the parents and relatives who came out to support those students getting awards. Thank you so much for coming to school!

This month, please join us for our Remembrance Day assembly on Nov. 10th at 1:20 p.m. and our parent-teacher interviews on the 17th. All are welcome!

No reorganization for King Edward

Dear Families: As you know, each September staff assignments and school organizations are affected by changes in enrolment over the summer. This makes the third year in a row that we have avoided a major reorganization. We are up in numbers across the grades and were pretty close to adding a class but our staff allocation has stayed the same. We are thrilled that so many families are choosing to send their children to King Edward.

We hope to see you at our Meet the Staff Night on Sept. 21st at 5:30 p.m.

We Need A New Name!

Students! We’ve been calling the school’s newsletter “Lions’ Pride” for years. It’s time for an Extreme Newsletter Makeover! Here’s your chance to put your mark on the school’s monthly news. Come up with a new and creative name for our newsletter and post it on this blog. The deadline for submissions is Friday September 23rd. A team of teachers and students will select the winning entry. The winner and runner will receive an automatic pass to the first “Pizza with Principal” day of the year.

Award Winning Home and School Association

King Edward has had a long history of parental involvement in our Home and School association. All of those lunch days and special events ( Fun Fair, Halloween) are run by a small group of dedicated volunteers. Add to this the time and dedication it takes to manage our snack and breakfast programs and you have a group that is highly deserving of recognition. This prestigious award is presented to groups who make a significant impact on the lives of students in the GECDSB. We are so proud of these wonderful volunteers and so grateful for all of the hours they dedicate to our school. You too can be part of this amazing group! Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month. Even if you can’t make the meetings, volunteers for the snack program and special events are always welcome. April Holidays

Some of our students will be commemorating Passover beginning at sundown April 18th and extending to April 26th. Many students also celebrate Easter on April 25th, 2011. KE staff hope all students enjoy the fellowship of family and friends during this time. There will be no school April 22 and 25, 2011.

Dear Parents: Cyberbullying via Facebook is a serious issue at many schools. Students say and do things on social networking sites that they wouldn’t say or do in person. When these comments impact a school’s ability to provide students with a safe and secure learning environment, schools are obliged to act according to the Safe Schools Act. This act, names bullying, including cyberbullying, as an infraction under the law which can lead to suspension and expulsion. Even if the bullying does not happen at school, but affects the school environment, schools can take action against the perpetrators. As parents you can protect your children by understanding cyberbullying and monitoring their activities on line.

What is Cyberbullying?

“Cyber-bullying involves the use of information and communication technologies such as e-mail, cell phone and pager text messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal Web sites, and defamatory online personal polling Web sites, to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.”

Cyberbullying behaviors are growing like pandemic across the World Wide Web. The behavior is personal and a proven polluter of your child’s peace of mind.

Kamaron Research Center polled thousands and students and teachers. Nearly half, millions of American tweens and teens are being impacted by cyber bullying. Plus, as children’s computer skills begin at younger ages, so do their cyber bullying behaviors. One in three elementary students report cyber bullying exposure.

Teens don’t tell their parents. Seven in 10 choose to suffer in silence rather than face the prospect of parental supervision, monitoring or web access limits.

Cyber Bullying For Parents

Four critical cyberbullying communications commandments

1. Do not Delete

2. Do not Respond

3. Do tell you

4. Do save the evidence

Communication: Talk regularly with your child about on-line activities he or she is involved in. Ask if their friends have received mean emails and txt and IM. Children are often more comfortable talking about issues indirectly.

Set Limits: Set firm guidelines for cell phone and computer use and monitor that behavior. Research shows teens spending more than 40 monthly hours’ online.

Raise Awareness: Talk specifically about cyber-bullying. Explain that that it is harmful and unacceptable behavior. Explain that it is not a joke or funny to the person receiving it.

Have Consequences: Outline your expectations for responsible online behavior and clearly explain the consequences for inappropriate behavior.

Save the Evidence: If you child is cyber bullied, save and copy the messages and websites, you may need this to take action. Encourage your child to tell you immediately if he or she is a victim of cyber-bullying. Tell your child “do not” respond to the bully and do not delete the “evidence”. Most teems believe they are untraceable. Not true. They usually leave electronic “fingerprints” in their wake.

Don’t Particpate: Many children get drawn into others’ conflicts or bullying via social media. Teach your children to BLOCK THE HATERS.

Partner: Call your child’s school; ask the principal what measurable, bullying preemption, activity-based programs they have in place today. Offer to serve on the group that expands the school’s behavior and student safety policy to include cyber bullying behavior that disrupts the schools teaching and learning environment. Ask about results.

If the situation call for it, partner with local law enforcement and schools resource officers for Harassment and stalking can have legal consequences.

Be Solution Focused: Focus, model, and reinforce the replacement behavior for taunting, ridiculing behavior. Kind words that focus on character qualities are the correct replacement for bullying words and behaviors.
